Umpires are a family. Whether that umpire worked 10 years ago or 10 minutes ago, he is still a part of that family. Professional Officiating has lost a part of its family. John Hege, 41, the founder of Professional Officiating and Oakland Police Officer, was removed from life support on March 24 after suffering a fatal gunshot wound on March 21. John was a graduate of St.Mary’s College and a Physical Education teacher at Tennyson High School before joining the Oakland Police Department. John’s life was about service to others and there is no way to adequately pay tribute to a man whose commitment to the communities that he served as a teacher, umpire, and police officershould stand as an example to us all. Our deepest sympathy goes out to hisfamily and friends and we pray that they can somehow find comfort in the face of such a tragedy.
